What is brand voice?
First, let’s have a moment of silence to roll our eyes at the seemingly pretentious idea that you are a brand.
Did you get that out of your system?
Good, because guess what? It’s 2018, baby, and you are, indeed, a brand.
Every successful brand needs a successful brand voice.
So, what does “brand voice” even mean?
Brand voice refers to the tone of your communications with your current and potential customers.
It’s just a fancy marketing way of saying “your tone of voice.”
The personality of your brand is reflected in the way that you talk to your people.
Your brand voice needs to be engaging and authentic to who you are, and what makes your brand amazing.
Here’s how I cultivate brand voice in 4 easy steps.
Write a list of 3-5 words that describe the way you want your ideal customer to think of your personality. Mine are: knowledgable, irreverent and warm.
Practice communicating with people across your various touch points of communication – your emails, your social media posts, even your videos. Are you reflecting the words you chose in your communications?
Revisit your words. Are you actually a warm person? Be honest with yourself! If you’re more standoffish, that’s okay! Revise your words so that when you’re communicating with your customers, it’s easy to both be authentic and to reflect your chosen words! Remember that there’s enough room for everyone. Not all brands are going to be snarky, because not all customers are snarky.
Check your copy! Read over the copy of your social media posts, rewatch your videos, reread your blog posts. Are you being authentic to the words you chose for your brand voice?
Brand voice doesn’t need to be complicated or difficult. The key is to remember that it’s going to evolve and change, and really, it’s just an extension of you.
